This happens because people are panicking over something very simple to overcome. The first step is an important step on the brake hard and keep your foot on the existence and the changes in neutral. Some people should'nt be allowed to drive. Press the brake, put the car in neurtral and up to a stop. And do not worry about the loss of power steering. Many automatic transmissions do not allow this option. But it seems it was more of a problem with the floor mats as standard with a lack of mechanical design.
